The company helping Big Lots navigate its bankruptcy has shared a list of stores likely to remain open.
Gordon Brothers Retail Partners, the Boston-based asset liquidation firm working with Big Lots, submitted a list of 200 locations in a court filing Monday at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. These locations are set to be transferred to Variety Wholesalers under leases or contracts.
In December, Variety Wholesalers, Inc., a retail business based in Henderson, North Carolina, announced plans to take over between 200 and 400 Big Lots stores through a deal with Gordon Brothers. Variety Wholesalers operates over 400 stores in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast, including brands such as Roses Discount Stores, Roses Express, Maxway, Bill’s Dollar Stores, and Bargain Town.
Big Lots, which filed for bankruptcy in September 2024, was the fourth-largest home goods retailer in the U.S. at the time. It had 1,392 stores at the beginning of 2024, but now operates 872 locations, according to its website.
The Big Lots stores listed in the filing are spread across 14 states, with the largest number in North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. Additional stores are located in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, and West Virginia.
Objections to Variety Wholesalers taking over any of the 200 locations must be submitted to the court by 4 p.m. on February 18, as stated in the filing.
Variety Wholesalers plans to continue operating these locations under the Big Lots brand, according to Gordon Brothers’ confirmation reported by Fast Company. The company may also acquire additional stores, Fast Company reported.
